Maintaining parks and countryside

The Council owns approximately 3000 acres (1250 hectares) of rich and diverse countryside comprising some very rare and important habitats.

The Greenspaces team is responsible for the day-to-day management and maintenance of:

  • more than 70 parks and 55 children's play areas
  • sports pitches and allotments
  • approximately 1,650 acres (700 hectares) of rich and diverse countryside, including parts of three Sites of Special Scientific and Nature Conservation Interest and large areas of woodland
  • shrubs and bedding displays on the highway, in town centres, the cemeteries and closed churchyards across the borough

Banstead Commons Conservators

The Council own the majority of Banstead Commons and the Banstead Commons Conservators are the statutory body responsible for their management. At 1350 acres (510 hectares), Banstead Commons are made up of four sites: Banstead Downs, Park Downs, Burgh Heath and Banstead Heath. Banstead Downs and Park Downs are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest and Banstead Heath is designated as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest.
